Seria A – THE RACE FOR THE TOP FOUR
The title race in Italy had been settled since the turn of the year, there was no way a Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Juventus were going to throw away a 12 point lead at the summit, but there seems to have been a twist in the battle for European places with the most fiercely contested battle for years in Italy.
Eight teams are fighting for the six European slots. Albeit Juventus (Champions elect) and Napoli, the other teams in the top half all are vying for a place in Europe for next season.
Sampdoria, Inter milan, Roma, Ac milan all got important wins over the weekend. But the race for top four is far from over as Atalanta and Lazio are lurking behind with games in hand.
Atalanta have been the biggest surprise as they find themselves in 6th place, they have scored the most goals per match and are only a goal behind Juventus who have 65 whilst still having a game in hand. A win at home to relegation threatened Empoli would see Atalanta rise up to the last Champions league place and leapfrog Ac Milan and Roma into 4th place.
Last season, Inter Milan qualified for the champions league after beating lazio away in the last game of the season with almost the last kick of the game with Icardi stealing the show. If last season’s grand finish is anything to go by, we should be expecting something very similar.
